Comment: This is a very variable species. High altitude forms have shorter stems, fewer flowers, smaller stem leaves, and denser rosettes. Western populations (lycica, serrulata) tend to have broader leaves. Also close to S. lycaonica (yellow flowers, broder rosette leaves), and forms with longer calyces (S. aydoensis, S. caramanica and S. doganii). Chowdhuri described S. dianthifolia var. pumila (= S. nuncupanda) as being smaller and more narrowleaved than S. dianthifolia J. Gay, which he considered to be resticted to the type locality (”Bulgarmaden”). However, I find no differences between type locality specimens and other specimens cited, wiith the possible of the holotype (?, has no number) being taller. This could easily be explained by more moist growth conditions. Note that Chowdhuri and Coode and Cullen placed S. nuncupanda in sect. Macranthae, and Yildiz and Cerpici did consequently not consider it.
